Marshall Dark, Sr. Scholarship

The Marshall Dark, Sr. Scholarship is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Marion to one or more deserving young scholars from McDowell County, who are not a child or grandchild of a Rotarian.  The original program was started in the 1940s making it one of the oldest local scholarships still being funded in our county.   The original award was designed to help recipients solely on a “needs” basis.  Eventually, eligibility qualifications were changed and today’s scholarships are based on strong academics, financial need, and community service.

As a way of giving back to his community, Marshall Dark, Sr. helped establish the Rotary Club of Marion in 1939.  He served in numerous club positions and was club president in 1943.   Recalling his own financial needs coming out of high school, Marshall, Sr. realized that financial aid and scholarships for needy students were very scarce.  The award originally started as a loan to college bound students but was changed to a full scholarship in 1959.

His son, Marshall Dark, Jr. joined Rotary Club of Marion soon after graduation from college in 1955.  Marshall, Jr. supported the club and community for more than 60 years, serving as Club President for the 1959-1960 term and is thought to be the youngest person to ever serve as President of the Rotary Club of Marion.

In 1992, Marshall Dark, III [Marshall Senior’s grandson] joined the Rotary Club of Marion and has carried on his family’s legacy of service and was Club President in the 2008 -2009 term. Thus for three generations and over 80 years, a person named Marshall Dark has continuously served our community thru active service in Rotary Club of Marion.

Starting with the vision and the ad selling hustle of Marshall Dark, Sr. and with the strong support of the Rotary Club of Marion, the Marshall Dark Scholarship has provided financial aid to many deserving McDowell County Students for over 70 years.  Many of the scholars receiving the scholarships have returned to McDowell County after college graduation where they, in turn, have and are giving back to our community further exemplifying the Rotary International 4 Way Test and the Rotary International ideal of Service Above Self.  Today, the Marshall Dark Scholarship has grown to over $260,000

Endowment Scholarship with McDowell Tech

Thanks to generous donations by the Rotary Club of Marion and friends of Rotary, an endowed scholarship was created in partnership with McDowell Technical Community College.  Additonally, a multipurpose training room in the Dogwood Building at McDowell Tech was dedicated in 2024.

Rotary Club of Marion Foundation members and friends met with MTCC adminstrator to outline plans for an endowed scholarship that would exist in perpetuity with a portion of annual earnings being allocated each year to student scholarships.

Rotary’s initial gift of $20,000 to the MTCC Foundation established the Rotary Club of Marion Foundation Scholarship, but that amount began to grow almost immediately. With donations from Snyder Paper Company, and from funds contributed by the late Julian Austin, a lifelong Rotarian and Dave Watson, and matching funds, the scholarship fund is now at $100,000.
